In this video, you will learn how to ask someone their age and say your age.
In the previous video, we have used some numbers higher than 19. In this animation, you will learn how to count from 20 to 69 in German, so you can say older people’s age, and also do some maths in German…
You can also download the Key Language PowerPoint, which includes sound files, to check and practise your numbers further.
Watch and listen to this fun video and go over numbers in German. Make sure you “mime” the numbers too!
Games play a big part in a child’s learning of a foreign language. Learn the counting rhyme “Ene mene muh”, which is the German equivalent of “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe” and use it as often as you can to decide who is starting a game or doing the dishes… You will definitely need it for your Lesson 6 Cultural Activity!
Ene, mene, muh, (Eeny, meeny, moe)
raus bist du, (you are out)
raus bist du noch lange nicht, (you are not out yet)
sag mir erst wie alt du bist. (first tell me how old you are)
1, 2, 3, …
The rhyme is used to select a person in games. If you would like to keep it short, you can only use Ene, mene, muh, raus bist du. In the longer version you just add the third and fourth sentence and ask how old someone is. For example, when the person is 11 years old, you stop and select someone when you are at ‘11’ and so on.
Challenge 1 – Games
And now… are you ready to play a game? Practise your German and have fun playing with your classmates!
Please refer to the Teacher’s notes to see what games you could play. We have included some number flashcards below as well should you need them!
Challenge 2 – Health and Wellbeing
It’s time to do a bit of exercise! Watch the animations, repeat and mime the actions. Don’t forget to check the Word document, it contains the script and the instructions for the activity “Vom Samen zum Baum”.
Please note that the instructions are given in the 2nd person singular, as if addressing each pupil individually.
Recycle your learning
Write a song – Create a little song to the tune of “She’ll be coming down the mountain” using words such as: Ich heiße Anna und ich bin 9 Jahre alt, 9 Jahre alt! Ich wohne in Edinburgh in Schottland, in Schottland! etc.
Once you’ve managed your Challenges, you can start lesson 6!
