Chinese 2 for Schools – Lesson 10
We are learning to… Say what we like and dislike
In this video, you will learn how to express likes and dislikes in Mandarin. You will also find out the names of 5 items of food.
Watch the video to learn how to say what members of your family like and dislike. Then practise with your shoulder partner: you could start talking about your own tastes and then talk about what you think your family members like and dislike.
In this simple song, you will hear the words for family members, and find out that they all like ice cream! You will be introduced to 2 additional family members: grandma and grandpa.
Watch the video and sing along!
In this animation, you will find out about what you should or shouldn’t do if invited into a Chinese family home.
Quiz!
We suggest playing the quiz in teams and using the whiteboards to record pupils’ answers.
Challenge 1 – Food statistics in the class
In pairs, find out what your partner likes and doesn’t like, from the list of food items you learnt in Video 10.1 (hamburgers, mangos, lychees, lollies and ice cream).
Use the question: do you like…?
Nǐ xǐhuān… ma?
你 喜 欢。。。吗?
For example, do you like hamburgers?
Nǐ xǐhuān hànbǎobāo ma?
你 喜 欢 汉堡包 吗?
Tick and cross the list below to record the answers.
Challenge 2 – Listening comprehension: Bingo!
Download the Bingo cards and mini-flashcards in the document below. Choose 6 out of the 8 family members (grandpa, grandma, mother, father, big sister, little sister, big brother, little brother) and place them on your card (or write/draw if unable to print the mini-flashcards).
For each person, choose one food item and place/write/draw it on the card. Decide whether they like or dislike that food by placing/drawing a thumb up or thumb down on each card.
Then listen to the sentences from slide 4 of the Key Language PowerPoint and cross out the cards if the sentence matches your selection. If you cross your 6 boxes, shout BINGO in Chinese!

Challenge 3 – Chinese Whispers
This game can be played as a whole class or in teams.
If playing as a whole class: pupils are sitting or standing in a circle. The teacher – or one pupil – says a sentence in Chinese to one of the pupils (for example: My dad likes ice cream). This pupil repeats to his/her neighbour, and the “passing” of the sentence continues until it reaches the last pupil. This pupil then goes and collects the 3 matching flashcards (in this example: dad /thumb up/ ice cream).
If playing in teams, organise 2 lines and the last pupils from each team can compete to get the flashcards.
Recycle your learning
At home – Ask each family member what they like or dislike – use the list of 5 food items introduced in this lesson. Report back to the class!
Once you’ve managed your Challenges, you can start lesson 11!
